HBO orders a TV adaptation of the Harry Potter novels, with author JK Rowling on board as an executive producer.

HBO has ordered a fresh adaptation of the Harry Potter novels, with author JK Rowling serving as an executive producer.

The film adaptation ran to eight movies and made stars of Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson, generating a total of almost $8 billion (£6.4 billion) at the box office.

The TV version, which will feature a brand new cast, is described as a "decade-long" project, with HBO promising that the show will be "produced with the same epic craft, love and care this global franchise is known for".

The programme will stream first on Max, the new name for HBO's streaming service HBO Max, which is due to launch in the US at the end of next month.

"Max's commitment to preserving the integrity of my books is important to me," said Rowling, "and I'm looking forward to being part of this new adaptation which will allow for a degree of depth and detail only afforded by a long form television series."

The broadcaster has yet to confirm a timeline for production or release of the series.
