Newcastle United begin talks with Barcelona over a potential deal for Philippe Coutinho, according to a report.

Newcastle United have reportedly entered negotiations with Barcelona over a deal for out-of-favour winger Philippe Coutinho.

The 27-year-old, who is currently on loan at Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich, is looking increasingly likely to depart Barca with a host of Premier League clubs said to be sniffing around the attacker.

Recent reports had suggested that Arsenal were at the head of the queue for the winger's signature, but the proposed £300m takeover of Newcastle could see the Magpies embark on a summer spending spree despite the coronavirus outbreak.

Indeed, Mundo Deportivo claim that Steve Bruce's side have made contact with Barcelona over a potential deal for Coutinho, who could be available for a cut-price figure in the current economic climate.

Coutinho has amassed eight goals and six assists in the Bundesliga this term, but the former Liverpool man is reportedly unlikely to play for Bayern again due to an ankle injury.

The Bundesliga leaders had the option to sign the Brazil international on a permanent basis but ultimately decided against taking up the offer.
