Manchester City's Raheem Sterling breaks Premier League record in Liverpool win

Raheem Sterling wins his 21st penalty - more than any other player in Premier League history - during Manchester City's 4-1 triumph over Liverpool on Sunday.

Raheem Sterling broke a Premier League penalty record during Manchester City's 4-1 triumph over Liverpool on Merseyside on Sunday.

Returning to an empty Anfield, Sterling won his side a penalty when he was tripped by Fabinho in the first half, although the normally prolific Ilkay Gundogan blazed the resulting spot kick over the bar.

Gundogan soon made amends with a brace on the night, while Sterling and Phil Foden also got in on the act as City stamped their authority on the Premier League champions.

Sunday's penalty marked the 21st time that Sterling has won his team a spot kick in the Premier League - more than any other player since the competition's inception.

Furthermore, the England international has now become just the third player to chalk up a century of goals while under the tutelage of Pep Guardiola, following in the footsteps of Lionel Messi (211) and Sergio Aguero (120).

City moved 10 points clear of Liverpool and five clear of second-placed Manchester United with Sunday's victory - their 14th in a row across all competitions.
