The shirt numbers available to Timo Werner at Liverpool

Amid speculation linking Timo Werner with a move to Liverpool, Sports Mole looks at which shirt numbers could be available for the striker at Anfield.

Timo Werner has been quick to establish himself as one of Europe's most sought-after prospects following his performances for RB Leipzig this season.

Indeed, the Germany international has chalked up 27 goals and 12 assists in all competitions this season and has been widely linked with a host of top clubs across the continent.

Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Chelsea have all been credited with an interest in the striker, but it appears to be Liverpool who are at the head of the queue for Werner's signature.

Recent reports have suggested that the Reds are closing in on a deal for the 24-year-old, who has amassed 88 goals in 150 appearances for Leipzig since arriving from Stuttgart in 2016.

Here, Sports Mole looks at which shirt numbers could be available to Werner should he move to Anfield.

Werner has possessed the number 11 shirt for Julian Nagelsmann's side since his arrival, a jersey which he previously wore for Stuttgart's Under-19 and Under-17 sides, and for the German national side during the 2017 Confederations Cup.

However, the 24-year-old would do well to claim the same shirt at Liverpool, as the number 11 jersey at Anfield is currently held by Mohamed Salah. It is fair to say that the Egyptian has certainly done the shirt justice, unlike a couple of his predecessors in Oussama Assaidi and Albert Riera.

Nevertheless, Salah has been linked with a move away from Anfield in the summer transfer window, potentially leaving the number 11 jersey available for a fresh face.

Werner's international jersey, the centre-forward's number nine shirt, has been held by Roberto Firmino at Anfield since the Brazilian inherited the number from Christian Benteke in 2016.

The traditional striker's shirt has been claimed by some of Liverpool's most prolific goalscorers down the years, including Ian Rush, Robbie Fowler and Fernando Torres.

However, more recent owners of the number nine jersey have failed to reach the same level as their precursors, with Benteke, Iago Aspas, Rickie Lambert and Andy Carroll all enduring underwhelming stays on Merseyside.

With regards to numbers currently vacant at Anfield, Werner's former number 19 shirt remains available since Sadio Mane switched to number 10.

Werner held this jersey throughout his final four seasons with Stuttgart and possessed the same number during his time with Germany's Under-17 side.

The number 16 shirt at Anfield has also remained untouched during Marko Grujic's two-year absence, while numbers 17, 21 and 28 are all up for grabs for Werner should he secure a move to Liverpool.
