Liverpool and Manchester City are allegedly contemplating an approach for West Ham United defender Nayef Aguerd next summer.

West Ham United defender Nayef Aguerd has allegedly emerged as a potential transfer target for Liverpool and Manchester City.

The 27-year-old has just started his second campaign at the London Stadium, already contributing a goal in three appearances which came in the 3-1 victory over Chelsea.

Before that, Aguerd had enjoyed arguably the best season of his career, initially recovering from injury to Morocco reach the 2022 World Cup semi finals.

West Ham then went on to lift the Europa Conference League trophy, with the centre-back featuring on eight occasions during that run, including the final versus Fiorentina.

Throughout the summer, Aguerd seemed certain to remain at the Hammers and that remained the case despite late interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia.

With four years left on his contract and West Ham not being in a position where they needed to sell, Aguerd stayed in the capital, but it appears that West Ham will soon have to fend off further interest.

According to The Sun, Liverpool and Man City are each monitoring Aguerd's performances during 2023-24 ahead of a possible bid in the future.

Aguerd is a left-footed defender - regarded as a rarity in central positions - and there is seemingly a feeling that he would benefit each squad.

Of the two, Liverpool have the most urgency when it comes to strengthening in the middle of their backline, a result of the uncertainty over Joe Gomez and Joel Matip.

Furthermore, captain Virgil van Dijk is now 32 years of age and Liverpool will, at some stage, require an alternative to the Netherlands international.

From the case of Manchester City, they are currently heavily stocked in central defence, with the impression being that the area is low down on their priority list.

Although Josko Gvardiol effectively acted as a straight replacement for Aymeric Laporte, manager Pep Guardiola already has Ruben Dias, John Stones, Manuel Akanji and Nathan Ake at his disposal.

Despite Aguerd turning 28 years of age next March, West Ham would still demand in excess of the £30m that they paid for the player last year.
