Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick defends his decision not to bring on Jesse Lingard during the 3-0 win over Brentford on Monday.

Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick has defended his decision not to bring on Jesse Lingard during the 3-0 win over Brentford on Monday.

The Red Devils ran out comfortable winners eventually following a first-half goal from Bruno Fernandes, a penalty from Cristiano Ronaldo and Raphael Varane's first goal for the club midway through the second half.

However, much was spoken about Rangnick's decision not to substitute on Lingard for a farewell appearance in front of United's supporters, in what was their final home game of the 2021-22 season.

Lingard's brother reacted furiously on social media following the events on Monday, complaining that after "20 years of blood, sweat and tears, four domestic trophies and three cup final goals," there was "not even a farewell".

Speaking ahead of United's trip to Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday, the interim boss defended his choice to use Fred, Edinson Cavani and Phil Jones off the bench instead.

Rangnick said: "In the last couple of weeks under my tenure, he has played far more games than he used to. Secondly, on game day against Chelsea he asked me to release him from the game and training the following day for personal family reasons.

"And this was the reason. With only three substitutes, I had to take a decision between Edinson Cavani and Jesse Lingard, or the young [Alejandro Garnacho], who I would have loved to have brought on and given a chance to play.

"You have to take a decision and this will not be to the liking of everybody and this is part of the game."

Lingard, who will leave Old Trafford on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract in June, has made just 16 Premier League appearances this season, only two of which have been starts.
