Martin Jol quits job as boss of Egypt's Al Ahly 'after receiving death threats'

Martin Jol leaves his role as head coach of Egyptian club Al Ahly after reportedly receiving death threats.

Martin Jol has stepped down as head coach of Egyptian side Al Ahly after reportedly receiving death threats.

The former Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham boss took charge of the club just six months ago.

Jol guided the team to Premier League glory in June, but was on the receiving end of angry abuse when the team failed to reach the semi-finals of the African Champions League - a competition that they have won a record eight times.

According to BBC Sport, Jol has opted to leave the club due to fears over his safety after arguments with supporters led to death threats on social media.

A statement from Al Ahly read: "Jol has told us he will not be able to complete his contract for personal reasons. We have accepted that and ended the contract with him."

Reports have claimed that some fans tried to attack the team during a training session on Tuesday.
