Harry Redknapp says that he will try to help his former club Portsmouth as liquidation day looms for the League One outfit.

Former Tottenham Hotspur and Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp has claimed that he will try to help Pompey as they struggle to stay afloat.

The newly-relegated League One outfit, who are thought to be just weeks away from liquidation, have been set a deadline of August 10 to either sell their senior players or enforce a wage cut.

Nwankwo Kanu has requested a claim of £3m from the south coast club, while Tal Ben Haim has argued that he is owed the same amount.

"I will be ringing Kanu today to see if there is anything I can do," Redknapp told ESPN. "I signed him for Portsmouth on a one-year contract and Tony Adams told me 'You must be mad, he is finished'. Six years later, he is still there.

"In the case of Tal Ben Haim, if players have a contract and are owed money, you can see why they think they should get it. But if the club closes down they won't get a penny. They need to think hard about that.

"Portsmouth has got to be saved. It's a great club with great traditions. It would be a disaster if this club went out of business."

Redknapp led Portsmouth to FA Cup glory during his second stint at the club.
