Cristiano Ronaldo could represent Portugal in Rio 2016 Olympics

Portuguese Football Federation president Fernando Gomes says that Cristiano Ronaldo could play in next summer's Rio Olympics.

President of the Portuguese Football Federation Fernando Gomes has confirmed that Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo could play in the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Portugal and Sweden have qualified for the Games after both teams reached the final of the European Under-21 Championships in the Czech Republic.

Rules state that each nation can take three over-age players, and Gomes is open to recruiting Ronaldo to help Portugal claim a gold medal in Brazil.

"It is a possibility," The Mirror quotes Gomes as saying. "We can take three players over the age of 23. Cristiano is one of the hypotheses, but we have still not sat down to discuss it."

The Olympics take place less than a month after the final of the European Championships in France next summer.
