Brentford confirm the signing of Tottenham Hotspur left-back Sergio Reguilon on loan for the remainder of the 2023-24 season.

Brentford have confirmed the signing of Tottenham Hotspur left-back Sergio Reguilon on loan for the remainder of the 2023-24 season.

The Spain international links up with Thomas Frank's side after his previous loan spell with Manchester United was cut short, and his deal is not believed to include an option or obligation to make permanent.

The Bees are believed to have first shown an interest in signing Reguilon back in November, and following a protracted process, they eventually succeeded in their efforts to bring him to the Gtech Community Stadium.

Reguilon is understood to have completed his medical with Brentford on Wednesday and arrives to cover for the injured Rico Henry and Aaron Hickey, the former of whom is expected to miss the remainder of the season with a knee problem.

"This is a very good signing for us. We've been talking for a while about how we need a good left-back, and we managed to get a very good left-back. I'm very pleased with the job that Phil Giles and Lee Dykes have done," Frank told the official Brentford website.

"Sergio is a perfect fit for us: a proven Premier League player in every aspect. He fits what we want. He's very offensive, has a very good cross and a very good left foot.

"He's got the experience we need to complement the rest of the squad and he's a good character. We need him, but I also think he needs us to show how good a footballer he is. I'm convinced that this will be a positive partnership."

Reguilon himself hailed Frank's influence in his mid-season switch to the Gtech Community Stadium, adding: "I'm very happy, I think this is what I need now in this moment in my career.

"I want to meet my team-mates and play with them, and now just enjoy my football on the pitch. Thomas was key in this move, for me. I'm in a moment where I need to play consistently and I think this club can give me that. These six months, I will do everything for the team, but it's also important for my future.

"I'm happy after my conversation with Thomas; he knows me very well. We had many conversations about everything. I remember the first time was more than 40 minutes talking about football, about everything.

"For me, that's so important because he knows me very well and I think we can do very good things together. The team has to re-focus in the Premier League, Ivan [Toney]'s back and I think we can do many things together."

Reguilon arrives in West London after making 12 appearances for Man United during the first half of the 2023-24 season, the same tally he managed during an injury-plagued spell with Atletico Madrid in the 2022-23 campaign.

The 27-year-old was previously on the books at Real Madrid for 15 years between 2005 and 2020, but he only managed 22 senior appearances for Los Blancos and spent the 2019-20 season with Sevilla, playing a key role in their Europa League triumph.

A few weeks after Los Palanganas' run to the continental crown, Reguilon joined Spurs in a £25.7m deal, and the left-back has registered two goals and nine assists in 67 matches for the Lilywhites since.

However, Reguilon has now been deemed surplus to requirements by both Antonio Conte and Ange Postecoglou, the latter of whom has settled on Destiny Udogie as his first-choice left-back this season.

Reguilon, whose Tottenham contract runs for another 18 months, will be in line to make his Brentford debut when the Bees lock horns with Nottingham Forest in Saturday evening's Premier League fixture.
