Espanyol rescue point against Almeria

Espanyol come from behind to earn a 1-1 draw with Almeria in their La Liga season opener, thanks to Sergio Garcia's goal 13 minutes into stoppage time.

Sergio Garcia scored 13 minutes into stoppage time as 10-man Espanyol rescued a 1-1 draw against Almeria in their La Liga match this evening.

The hosts squandered the chance to take the lead in the opening minutes of the match when Fernando Soriano blazed an effort from close range over the bar.

They were close again when Sebastian Dubarbier fired in a strike from the edge of the box, but he saw his effort saved by Kiko Casilla.

Espanyol were dealt a blow in the 33rd minute when Anaitz Arbilla was sent off for picking up a second booking.

Tomer Hemed was inches away from making Almeria's man advantage count just before the break, but his shot came crashing back off the post.

The hosts did manage to break the deadlock in the 52nd minute when Soriano latched onto Edgar's pass before firing an effort into the bottom corner.

Midway through the second half, the match was temporarily delayed due to a floodlight failure, resulting in a large amount of time added on at the end of the game.

Espanyol kept pushing for an equaliser and, in the 13th minute of stoppage time, they drew level when Garcia took down a long ball inside the box before working some space from which to slot into the bottom corner.
