Preview: Denmark Under-17s vs. Wales Under-17s - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Monday's European Under-17s Championship clash between Denmark Under-17s and Wales Under-17s, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

On Monday, Denmark Under-17s will begin their European Under-17 Championship campaign against Wales Under-17s at the Dasaki Stadium in Achna, Cyprus.

Denmark are set to feature at the tournament for the seventh time, while Wales are making their second appearance at the Championship.

Match preview

Denmark squeezed through the first phase of qualifying as one of the best third-placed sides, before they upped the ante to top Group 6 in the elite round.

After playing out a goalless draw with Turkey, Denmark picked up wins over Serbia and Georgia to finish top of the group, ensuring that they will appear at the European Under-17 Championship for the second time in three years.

They successfully negotiated the group stage in their most recent appearance in 2022, before their journey ended with a quarter-final defeat to Serbia.

On this occasion, the Danes will be aiming to finish in the top two of a group that contains Wales, Croatia and Austria.

Denmark have progressed from the group stage in three of their previous seven appearances, including a run to the semi-finals in 2011.

Wales are set to feature in a second straight European Under-17 Championship after they made their first appearance in last year's competition.

They were unable to make it out of the group stage, finishing bottom of their group after winning one and losing two of their three group matches.

In qualifying, the Young Dragons won both of their two matches in the first phase, before taking six points from a possible nine in the elite round.

Victories against Romania and Bulgaria proved enough for Wales to finish in second place and secure their spot in the 2024 tournament.

Although they will have their work cut out, Wales will travel to Cyprus with aspirations of progressing to knockout rounds for the very first time.

Team News

FC Copenhagen goalkeeper Tobia Breum-Harild is set to line up between the posts, while Philip Sondergaard and Noah Markmann are expected to operate as the two centre-backs.

Oliver Hojer scored a hat-trick in Denmark's final qualifier against Georgia in March, highlighting the goal threat that he can offer from midfield.

The responsibility of leading the line will fall to Arsenal forward Chidozie Obi, who has amassed 32 goals in the Under-18 Premier League this season.

As Wales, Coventry City's Luis Lines is expected to start in goal ahead of Manchester City youngster Max Hudson.

Rhys Morrish and Charlie Walker-Smith are set to form the central-defensive partnership, while Brayden Clarke and Jac Thomas are expected to be utilised as the two full-backs.

Elliot Myles will be one of Wales' main attacking outlets after netting three goals to finish qualifying as his country's top scorer.

Denmark Under-17s possible starting lineup:
Breum-Harild; Stucker, Sondegaard, Markmann, Andersen; Heyde, Lassen, Hojer; Johannsen, Hyseni, Obi

Wales Under-17s possible starting lineup:
Lines; Clarke, Morrish, Walker-Smith, Thomas; Bradbury, Gardner, Allen; Kpakio, Myles, Bostock

SM words green background

We say: Denmark Under-17s 2-1 Wales Under-17s

Both teams will be keen to start the tournament with a victory, but we think that Denmark will have the extra quality required to claim a narrow win in Monday's contest.
