Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan is reportedly set to leave the club in this summer's transfer window.

Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan is reportedly set to leave the club in this summer's transfer window.

While the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva have starred in midfield throughout the 2021-22 campaign, Gundogan has also been heavily involved this term, recording eight goals and six assists in 42 appearances across all competitions.

However, the Daily Mail reports that the 31-year-old has been told that he is free to find a new club this summer, as there are no plans to extend his contract which is due to expire in June 2023.

The report adds that Gundogan was spotted boarding a plane to Madrid on Monday, and although City's first-team squad have been given two days off, the reason for his trip to the Spanish capital remains unknown.

La Liga champions Real Madrid have previously held an interest in the midfielder, during his days at Borussia Dortmund, but it remains to be seen whether they would consider reigniting their interest in the Germany international.

Gundogan was the first signing made by Man City boss Pep Guardiola back in the summer of 2016, and he has since played a total of 156 times in all tournaments, contributing to 46 goals and helping the club win 10 trophies.
