Preview: Sheffield United vs. Luton Town - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's Premier League clash between Sheffield United and Luton Town, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Separated by three points inside the Premier League drop zone, Sheffield United and Luton Town will scrap it out in a Boxing Day contest at Bramall Lane.

The Blades have been revived by Chris Wilder's return but still sit bottom of the table, while their visitors celebrated an emotional victory in their final fixture before Christmas.

A dramatic draw at Villa Park last week left Sheffield United pondering what might have been, as the Premier League's last-placed club briefly threatened to end the long unbeaten run of an Aston Villa side flying high in the standings.

However, Nicolo Zaniolo's stoppage-time equaliser ultimately cancelled out a late Cameron Archer strike against his former club, leaving Chris Wilder's men with only one point from a steadfast defensive performance.

While Villa missed their chance to move top of the table, the Blades were temporarily lifted off the bottom - at least until Burnley's win on Saturday sent them back down to the basement - and they have now taken four points from their last three matches.

Nonetheless, the Yorkshire side remain five points adrift of safety approaching the midpoint of their latest comeback campaign and face an uphill battle to secure survival.

Having beaten Brentford 1-0 in their last home game, they are intent on making Bramall Lane a fortress once again, so meeting another promoted club on Sheffield soil ups the ante for their Boxing Day fixture.

It was back in 1990, though, that United last tasted top-flight success on December 26, with a 1-0 win over none other than Luton Town at Kenilworth Road; since then, they are winless in six, failing to score on five occasions.

Luton have won just one of their last seven league games against the Blades, though it was at Bramall Lane in the clubs' most recent meeting - last season's 1-0 victory during the Championship promotion race.

Despite their dismal away form since re-joining the big time - with only one win from eight Premier League road trips to date - the Hatters may still travel north in expectation of improving that head-to-head record, after a morale-boosting win at the weekend renewed hopes of staying afloat in England's top tier.

As with Archer at Villa, Luton's Andros Townsend struck against his old club on Saturday afternoon, as the home side stunned ambitious Newcastle United, and the ex-Toon winger then celebrated by holding aloft the jersey of Tom Lockyer, his absent skipper.

Several tributes were paid to Town's captain, who suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch in a subsequently abandoned game against Bournemouth, and his team's brave 1-0 win served as the perfect pick-me-up for the central defender.

Jacob Brown and midfield maestro Ross Barkley both hit the woodwork, too, in another impressive performance that gave visibly emotional coach Rob Edwards good reason to smile following a tough few days.

Having ended a run of three straight defeats and edged to within two points of 17th-placed Nottingham Forest, Luton will want to complete their festive schedule in a similar manner: maximum points on Boxing Day would certainly set them up nicely for Saturday's home game against Chelsea.

Team News

Sheffield United's Oli McBurnie celebrates scoring their first goal with Oliver Norwood, Vini Souza and Jayden Bogle on October 21, 2023© Reuters

As Jayden Bogle is suspended after picking up his fifth booking of the season versus Aston Villa, Chris Wilder must make at least one change to the Sheffield United side that came so close to winning in Birmingham on Friday night.

George Baldock could be shifted to wing-back if Wilder opts to retain a three-man defence, but other options to play centrally are few and far between: Chris Basham (ankle) and John Egan (foot) remain sidelined, so the Blades boss will hope to have Anel Ahmedhodzic back from injury.

Set to fight it out with Cameron Archer to start up front, Scotland striker Oli McBurnie has been directly involved in four goals in his last five Premier League appearances at Bramall Lane, scoring in both of his last two.

Meanwhile, absent Luton Town captain Tom Lockyer should again be replaced by Gabriel Osho, and the visitors will also be without both Reece Burke and Dan Potts due to thigh injuries.

Zimbabwe midfielder Marvelous Nakamba is back in contention following a one-match ban, but Albert Sambi Lokonga could be retained after helping Ross Barkley run the engine room on Saturday.

Although Elijah Adebayo is expected to feature as a lone striker, fellow forward Carlton Morris scored both of Luton's goals against Sheffield United in the Championship last season, netting both home and away.

Sheffield United possible starting lineup:
Foderingham; Robinson, Ahmedhodzic, Trusty; Baldock, Souza, Brooks, Larouci; McAtee, Archer; McBurnie

Luton Town possible starting lineup:
Kaminski; Mengi, Osho, Bell; Kabore, Lokonga, Barkley, Doughty; Townsend, Brown; Adebayo

We say: Sheffield United 1-0 Luton Town

This Yuletide six-pointer could be tightly contested, as both sides have tightened up of late, as they belatedly come to terms with life in the Premier League. Luton's first clean sheet arrived at the weekend, but they will not repeat that feat on Boxing Day, with Sheffield United slight favourites to prevail in a close battle at Bramall Lane.
