Manchester United vs. Liverpool: Head-to-head record and past meetings

Ahead of Sunday's Premier League clash between Man Utd and Liverpool, Sports Mole looks at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two clubs.

Old Trafford will play host to arguably the biggest match-up in English football on Sunday afternoon, as Manchester United welcome Liverpool in the Premier League.

Liverpool are currently top of the table, two points ahead of second-placed Arsenal, while Man United are down in sixth, some nine points off fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur.

Both sides were in action on Thursday evening, with Liverpool surviving a scare to beat Sheffield United 3-1, while Man United lost 4-3 at Chelsea in incredible circumstances.

Here, Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two sides, as they prepare to go to battle for the third time this season.

Previous meetings: 166
Man Utd wins: 68
Draws: 48
Liverpool wins: 50

The two giants of English football have locked horns on 166 occasions throughout history, with Man United leading the head-to-head record 68 wins to Liverpool's 50, while there have also been 48 draws.

As mentioned, the pair have already met twice this term, with the points being shared in a goalless draw at Anfield back in December, before Man United recorded a 4-3 victory over Liverpool in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup in the middle of last month.

Liverpool famously beat Man United 7-0 at Anfield last season, but the Red Devils triumphed in the reverse game at Old Trafford, running out 2-1 winners in the early stages of Erik ten Hag's time at the helm.

The 20-time English champions have only won two of their last seven meetings with Liverpool in all competitions, while they have been victorious in just three of their last 13 encounters.

These two teams have locked horns on 63 occasions in the Premier League, with Man United leading the head-to-head record 29 wins to Liverpool's 19, while the remaining 15 fixtures have finished level.

The top three goalscorers in Premier League encounters between the two sides come from Liverpool, with Mohamed Salah on 10, while Steven Gerrard and Robbie Fowler managed eight and six respectively, ahead of Man United's all-time leading goalscorer Wayne Rooney (six).

Liverpool have enjoyed the better of the recent league meetings, triumphing in five of the last eight match-ups in England's top flight, suffering just one defeat in the process.

Man United have actually only beaten Liverpool once in the Premier League since 2018, and there have been some heavy losses, the famous 7-0, in addition to a 5-0 defeat at Old Trafford in October 2021.

Liverpool have won 4-2 and 5-0 in two of their last three league visits to Old Trafford, which should hand them confidence heading into this match, although their last two games on the road to Man United have ended in defeats.

Man United's Champions League hopes have faded over the last week, but there is no question that the Red Devils will be fired-up to potentially derail Liverpool's title bid.
