La Liga president Javier Tebas hopes that on-loan Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood will stay in Spanish football beyond the end of the season.

La Liga president Javier Tebas is hopeful that on-loan Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood will stay in Spanish football beyond the end of the 2023-24 campaign.

Having been informed last summer that he had no future at Man United, the Englishman moved to Getafe on loan, and he has scored seven goals and registered five assists in 25 outings for the Spanish outfit this term.

Greenwood has five goals and five assists in 22 La Liga appearances, while he netted twice in three outings in the Copa del Rey before Getafe were eliminated from the competition.

As it stands, the 22-year-old will return to Man United this summer, but Getafe have expressed a desire to keep him, while Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are both thought to be keen on a permanent deal.

Man United's new minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe has suggested that there could be a route for Greenwood back into the first team at Old Trafford.

Ratcliffe has said that he will look at "the real facts" of Greenwood's high-profile case before a decision is made, with Man United expected to make a final call by the end of May.

Despite the recent developments, it is still thought to be unlikely that the forward will continue his career at Man United, where he has a contract until the summer of 2025.

In January 2022, following accusations from a woman, the Red Devils academy product was arrested on suspicion of rape and assault, and he was then further arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and threats to kill.

The Englishman was also facing charges of attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, but the case against him was dropped last February.

Tebas has said that he is hopeful Greenwood will stay in Spanish football beyond the end of the season.

"I'm a lawyer. For someone that has come out of a legal case innocent, there's nothing to say. I think it's good because he's another great player," Tebas said at the Financial Times Business of Football Conference in London.

"Maybe the circumstances have made it easier for him to come, but he's a great player and I have got no other comments to make.

"He's doing really well at Getafe as a player and I hope he continues to be successful and continues to stay in Spanish football, because that's always good for us.

"When someone isn't condemned, what should we have done? This is what courts exist for. It is not up to me to know his case in detail. He is just another player."

Greenwood has scored 35 goals and registered 12 assists in 129 matches for Man United in all competitions, and he was regarded as one of the best young players in world football before his arrest.
