Australia's Tim Cahill "proud" of wonder goal

Australia's former Everton attacker Tim Cahill admits that his spectacular volley in the World Cup defeat to Netherlands is among the best goals of his career.

Australia's Tim Cahill has revealed that he ranks his volley against Netherlands as the best goal of his career.

The former Everton man scored a left-footed wonder goal in the 3-2 World Cup Group B defeat to the Dutch on Wednesday, thumping Ryan McGowan's long ball past Jasper Cillessen via the underside of the crossbar.

The Socceroos went on to lose the game and are now on the verge of elimination from the tournament, but Cahill, 34, has admitted that the stage on which he netted his spectacular effort means that he will remember it for a long time.

Cahill told reporters: "I score goals like that every day in the garden, but to do it on the biggest stage in the world makes me very proud. The goal is right up there with my very best I suppose just because of the way it went in.

"You think of [Marco] Van Basten and [Robin] Van Persie and players like that. But people only ever expect me to score headers regardless of some of the goals I have scored in my career, so it was a great moment.

"There's also the thought that Brazil is the home of football and I am sure that goal resonated around the world so it is a goal that me, my family and friends can share forever."

Cahill is suspended for Australia's final Group B game after picking up two yellow cards.
