Danny Kedwell saw his early penalty saved as Gillingham enter the half-time break of their League One clash with Leyton Orient level at 0-0.
Gavin Hoyte surged forward in the opening four minutes and laid on a precise cross for Brennan Dickenson, but the forward headed wide of goal.
The Gills were then offered a great chance to open the scoring from the spot when Scott Cuthbert felled Dickenson, but Adam Legzdins kept out Kedwell's weak penalty.
The missed spot kick didn't seem to affect the hosts though, who went close once more through Michael Doughty's 14th-minute half-volley from 20 yards that flew narrowly over the bar.
Leyton Orient did go close in the 34th minute, but Stuart Nelson was equal to Dean Cox's low drive.
