Paul Merson: 'Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang would only be joining Man Utd for money'

Arsenal legend Paul Merson claims that the only reason for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to join Manchester United would be money-related.

Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has claimed that the only reason for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to join Manchester United would be money-related.

The Red Devils are reportedly one of a number of clubs considering a summer move for the 30-year-old, who could be available for £50m with Arsenal weighing up whether to cash in on their top scorer before he enters the final year of his contract.

Merson believes that Aubameyang is exactly what United have been missing in recent years, but does not think that a switch to Old Trafford would be motivated by a desire to win trophies.

"I don't think you can say Aubameyang would be going for ambition if he went to Manchester United. He'd be going for the money because he's almost 31 and this would likely to be his last move," Merson told Sky Sports News.

"At the moment, you can't say you are going to go to Manchester United and get guaranteed trophies. You won't be able to guarantee United winning anything in the next two or three seasons. They are getting better but it's not ambitions, it's the money.

"If it was Manchester City or Liverpool, that would be different. You'd be thinking of course, he's ambitious and he wants to win things. I'm not saying United won't win things, but you can't assure me of it. I can assure you Man City or Liverpool will in the next few years."

Aubameyang has scored 61 goals in 97 appearances for Arsenal, including 20 in 32 outings this season.
