Portugal sack Fernando Santos as national team coach following the nation's quarter-final exit at the 2022 World Cup.

Portugal have relieved Fernando Santos of his duties as head coach following the nation's quarter-final exit at the 2022 World Cup.

The Selecao progressed to the quarter-finals of the tournament in Qatar, before they were eliminated with a 1-0 defeat to Morocco.

Following the narrow loss to the Atlas Lions, Santos revealed that he would discuss his future when he returned to Lisbon.

A recent report indicated that Portugal were preparing to sack Santos, and it has now been confirmed that he has been relieved of his duties.

The 68-year-old guided his country to Euro 2016 glory, which represented Portugal's first trophy at a major tournament, and he also won the inaugural edition of the UEFA Nations League in 2018-19.

However, Santos oversaw a last-16 exit at the 2018 World Cup and Euro 2020, before his tenure ultimately came to end with a quarter-final defeat in Qatar.
